1. Gazette notification of Women’s Reservation Act 2023 released
Late night on 16th April, Gazette notification of Women’s Reservation Act-2023 has been issued.
- According to the Women’s Reservation Act-2023, women will be given 33% reservation in Parliament.
- According to the notification, this law has come into effect from 16 April 2026. However, this reservation will be implemented only after the delimitation is done according to the census data of 2026-27.
- This bill was passed during the special session of Parliament in September 2023.
- After the implementation of the law, one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and Delhi Assembly will be for women.
- In this 33%, reservation will be given for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) women on vertical basis.
- Women’s Reservation Act 2023 (128th Constitutional Amendment) has been officially named Nari Shakti Vandan Act.
- After this bill is passed, it will be implemented after the data released after the first census.
- After getting approval from the Parliament, this law will come into effect from March 31, 2029.
- There is a right to review any reservation law after 70 years of its implementation, but a time limit of 15 years has been kept in it.
- From 1998 to 2003, the government introduced 4 bills but the government failed.
- In 2009, the government introduced the bill amid protests.
- In 2010, the Union Cabinet passed it in the Rajya Sabha.
1996 Women’s Reservation Bill was introduced for the first time in Parliament.

2. Former President of Indian Olympic Association Narayan Ramachandran passes away
On April 16, former Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narayan Ramachandran passed away. He was 77 years old.
- Ramachandran was the President of the Indian Olympic Association from 2014 to 2017.
- From 2008 to 2016, Ramachandran was the Secretary General of the Squash Rackets Federation of India. He made Chennai the squash center in the country.
- Ramachandran founded the India Squash Academy in Chennai in 2000, which has produced top athletes like Joshna Chinappa, Deepika Pallikal and Saurav Ghoshal.
- Ramachandran was the patron of the Asian Squash Federation and also served as the CEO of the Triathlon Federation of India.
- Ramachandran was awarded the ‘National Sports Promotion Award’ from the Government of India in the category ‘Establishment and Management of Excellent Sports Academies’ in 2011.
- In August 2016, she received the Olympic Order Silver by the International Olympic Committee in Rio de Janeiro for her services to the Olympic movement.
Ramachandran was also a part of the audit department of the World Triathlon Committee.

3. India slipped to 6th position in economy
On April 17, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released the World Economic Outlook (WEO) report.
- According to WEO report, India has slipped from 5th to 6th in terms of economy.
- Earlier in 2024, India was at 5th position. At that time India’s GDP was about 3.76 trillion dollars.
- India’s GDP in 2025 will be around $3.92 trillion, but Britain’s GDP is around $4 trillion. Because of this, Britain has gone ahead of India.
- The world’s largest economy is America, whose value is approximately $30.8 trillion. It is followed by China ($19.6 trillion) and Germany ($4.7 trillion). Japan is at fourth and United Kingdom at fifth.
- India’s GDP for 2025-26 to decline from Rs 357 trillion to Rs 345 trillion.
- The Indian currency has fallen sharply against the US dollar during the last year. Besides, the exchange rate has also declined. At the same time, the price of British pound and Japanese yen has increased against the dollar.
- In the WEO, the IMF releases the World Economic Outlook report twice a year. It contains global growth, inflation, economy and facts related to it.
- IMF includes 191 countries. Its headquarters is Washington DC.

4. Gautam Adani becomes Asia’s richest person
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index report was released on April 17. According to this report, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has become the richest person in Asia.
- Adani’s net worth has reached $92.6 billion i.e. about Rs 8.59 lakh crore.
- Earlier, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Limited, was at number one in this list.
- Now his net worth has reached 90.8 billion dollars i.e. about 8.42 lakh crore rupees.
- Bloomberg is a daily index tracking the net worth of the world’s richest people.
- In this, figures are updated every day in New York. Net worth is calculated based on companies’ stock prices and other public holdings.
- It is based on the market, so the ranking changes as soon as the share prices fall.

5. India and Austria sign MoU on food safety
On April 16, PM Narendra Modi met Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in New Delhi. In this meeting, India and Austria signed an MoU on food safety.
- Along with this, a Letter of Intent (LOI) was exchanged regarding military matters and counter terrorism.
- Addressing the joint press briefing, PM Modi said that India and Austria are partners in basic structure, innovation.
- Both countries will also launch India-Austria Working Holiday Program to promote youth exchange.
- Both countries will also strengthen partnership in semiconductor, quantum and biotechnology sectors.
- 160 Austrian companies are active in the Indian market in key sectors including semiconductor production, renewable energy, automotive and infrastructure.
Trade between India and Austria grew by almost 3 billion euros in 10 years.
