During Agarkar’s tenure, Team India won the T-20 World Cup in 2024 and this year and the Champions Trophy early last year.

BCCI has renewed the tenure of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar for one year. Now he will remain in this post till the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027.

A senior BCCI official told news agency ANI that Agarkar has been given a new tenure. He will remain on the post for the fourth year on the basis of his performance.

According to BCCI rules, the selector can hold the post for a maximum of four years. Earlier in the media report, it was claimed that Agarkar himself had demanded BCCI to extend his tenure till 2027 ODI World Cup.

The board had made Agarkar the chief selector for two years in 2023. He had already got a one-year extension in 2025. Now his tenure is being renewed till 2027. In this way, Agarkar will remain the Chief Selector for a total of four years.

India won two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy during his tenure.

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure so far has been very successful. The Indian teams selected by him made it to the finals of four ICC tournaments between October 2023 and March 2026. Of these, India won three titles. Two T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026 and ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Apart from this, Team India also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where it had to face defeat at the hands of Australia.

Tough decisions like Kohli-Rohit’s retirement and Shami’s exclusion

The committee led by Agarkar took many tough and big decisions. The most prominent among these was handling the process of retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket and gradually ousting senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami from international cricket. At the same time, big decisions were also taken like dropping Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill from the 2026 T20 World Cup team and giving a chance to an in-form player like Ishan Kishan.

Focus on continuity for 2027 ODI World Cup

The next ODI World Cup is to be held in 2027. BCCI wants to maintain stability in the team core and selection process. Agarkar’s tenure renewal means that he will continue on the mission of preparing the team for the next World Cup. The board believes that making a change in the leadership of the selection committee at this time can spoil the rhythm of the team.
