Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran is fighting for his life in the ICU of a hospital in Delhi. He has a rare and life-threatening disease called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). According to ESPNcricinfo, the disease has reached stage four and the condition is critical. Shapoor, who is about to turn 39, came to India in January for treatment. Initially the condition improved slightly, but later the infection increased again. At present he is able to speak very little and sleeps most of the time. According to doctors, in HLH the immune system starts attacking the body. Bone marrow, liver, spleen and lymph nodes are affected by this. This disease usually occurs in children, but can also occur in adults with weak immunity. Played his first match in 2009. Shapoor Zadran played 80 international matches for Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020, which includes 44 ODIs and 36 T20s. He had complained of ill health for the first time in October last year. After this, doctors in Afghanistan advised him to go to India for treatment. Rashid helped in getting the visa. His visa to come to India was quickly approved. Rashid Khan and ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf helped in this. Ashraf contacted ICC chairman Jay Shah, while Rashid sought help from contacts in the IPL and other leagues. After recovery, he was discharged. On January 18, Shapoor reached Delhi and was admitted to the hospital. He was also accompanied by his wife and former teammate Asghar Afghan. His brother Gamay Zadran, who lives in Canada, joined on January 26. According to Gamai Zadran, Shapoor initially had serious infections throughout his body, including tuberculosis. MRI and CT scans revealed that the infection had reached the brain. After treatment, he was discharged for some time and started living in a hotel. After 20 days, the infection increased again. After about 20 days, the infection increased again and he had to be admitted to the hospital again. After this he contracted dengue, which worsened his condition. His red blood cell count had reduced considerably and immunity had become extremely weak. On March 26, he underwent a bone marrow test during Ramadan, which revealed that he was in stage four of HLH. During this period, the Afghanistan cricket community has fully supported him. Asghar Afghan is commuting between Dubai and Delhi and is spending time with him in the hospital. Rashid Khan is also in touch with the doctors and had come to meet. Shahid Afridi also inquired about the well being of Shapoor, including spinner AM Ghazanfar, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf. Former Pakistan player Shahid Afridi also called and got information. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai is also going to meet or talk to him. Shapoor’s weight has decreased by about 14 kg. At the time of second admission, the weight was 98 kg, which has now reduced to around 84 kg. According to his brother, the effect of the recently given steroids is visible and it is expected that the condition may improve. What is HLH? Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a very rare but dangerous disease. In this, the body’s immune system becomes excessively active and mistakenly starts attacking the body’s own cells. Due to this, the patient has continuous high fever and the blood cells start decreasing (which is called cytopenia). This disease is mostly seen in children, but it can happen to people of any age.
