Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (TANDA) of Himachal Pradesh has set a new record in the field of modern medicine. Principal of the college, Dr. Milap Sharma said that the institute has created a record by successfully performing the first robotic Whipple’s surgery in the state. This achievement places TANDA among the select state-of-the-art medical centers in the country. The Rs 30 crore Robotic Surgery Center at the institute was virtually inaugurated by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu from Chandigarh on September 12, 2025. After Chamiyana in Shimla, Tanda is the second government hospital in the state where this modern facility is available. Since the inception of this centre, within just a few months, more than 100 robotic assisted surgeries have been successfully performed by experts from the departments of Gynecology, General Surgery and Urology. Dr. Sharma also informed that now there are preparations to establish facilities like 3-Tesla MRI and Pet Scan in the institute. The pressure of patients is continuously increasing. The pressure of patients from North India on Tanda Medical College is continuously increasing. The bed occupancy rate here has reached 105 percent. Annually about 5.89 lakh patients reach OPD and about 37 thousand surgeries are performed. To reduce this huge crowd of patients and the waiting period of surgery, the government has recently approved new posts of super-specialists through the cabinet. Experts in departments like Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Urology are being deployed in the Department of Emergency Medicine. This will ensure that serious patients get super-specialty treatment without delay. To overcome the shortage of manpower in the hospital, a large number of paramedical staff including 300 staff nurses, 27 senior residents, 14 casualty medical officers and 47 ward boys have been deployed in recent times. To strengthen the security arrangements, 30 security guards have already joined duty.
