John Ternes will now be the new CEO of Apple in place of Tim Cook. He will take charge of the company from September 1, 2026. Cook will now play the role of executive chairman of the company’s board of directors. The board has unanimously approved this plan.

Tim Cook: Made Apple a 4 trillion dollar company

Tim Cook joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011. Under his leadership, Apple’s market value has increased from $350 billion (about ₹32 lakh crore) to $4 trillion (about ₹350 lakh crore). The company’s annual revenue has also increased from $ 108 billion (about ₹ 10 lakh crore) to cross 416 billion dollars (₹ 39 lakh crore) by 2025.

John Ternes: 25 years of experience and work with Steve Jobs

John Ternes joined this tech company in the year 2001. He was then part of the product design team. He has also worked with company founder Steve Jobs. Before Apple, he worked as a mechanical engineer at ‘Virtual Research Systems’.

Ternes became vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and was then promoted to senior vice president in 2021. Over the years, Turnus has worked on major devices like the iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Apple Watch and the recently launched MacBook Neo.

Turns, 51, is roughly the same age Tim Cook was when he took over as Apple’s CEO. Ternes has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Ternes said, I am very grateful to have this opportunity to carry forward Apple’s mission. I’ve spent almost my entire career at Apple, and I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to work under Steve Jobs and have Tim Cook as my mentor.”

Tim Cook said, “John Ternes has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an inventor, and the heart to lead with integrity. He is a visionary leader whose contributions to Apple over the last 25 years are incalculable.”

These will be the big challenges before John Turnus:

  • Apple’s AI is far behind compared to companies like Google and Microsoft. Turnus will have to improve this and get back in the race.
  • Questions are being raised on Apple’s business model in America and Europe. He is accused of violating monopoly rules. This would have to save the company.
  • Amid the Trump government’s dispute with China, it will have to overcome challenges such as properly shifting manufacturing to countries like India and Vietnam.
  • Critics say that Apple no longer has the same innovation as before. Ternus will have to prove that the company is still the most innovative company in the world.

Cook and Turnus will work together for the next 4 months

Tim Cook will continue as CEO until the end of August this year to ensure a smooth transition with Ternus. After becoming executive chairman, Cook will focus on connecting with global policy makers and focusing on specific aspects of the company. Cook said that serving as Apple’s CEO has been the greatest privilege of his life.

Other changes in the board: Arthur Levinson will become lead independent director.

Arthur Levinson, who has been the non-executive chairman of Apple for the last 15 years, will take over the role of lead independent director from September 1, 2026. John Ternes will also join the board of directors on the same day. Levinson said Ternus’ deep technical knowledge and focus on creating great products will lead Apple to a great future.

Focus on environment and privacy

Under Cook’s leadership, Apple has reduced its carbon footprint by 60%. Ternus also focused on sustainability by using recycled aluminum and 3D printed titanium (Apple Watch Ultra 3). Also, they have promoted technologies that increase the durability and repairability of products.

Apple has had 7 CEOs so far in its 50 year journey.
