Justice Yashwant Verma, who was transferred from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court in the cash scandal case, submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu on 9 April. On March 14, 2025, bundles of burnt notes of Rs 500 each were found in a fire in Justice Yashwant’s Delhi house. After the controversy escalated, he was transferred from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court.

Born in the family of a judge of Allahabad High Court, Justice Yashwant Verma spent his childhood in Allahabad. He grew up among legal professionals in Allahabad, considered the hub of legal professionals.

Yashwant Verma did his Bachelors in Commerce Honors from Delhi University. Taking forward his father’s legacy, he did LL.B from Rewa University of MP in 1992. Started his practice by practicing in Civil Affairs and worked as Special Counsel for Allahabad High Court from 2006 to 2012.

From 2012 to August 2013, Justice Yashwant Verma was the Chief Standing Counsel for the Government of Uttar Pradesh. After this he became a senior advocate. On 13 October 2014, he was nominated under the collegium system and promoted as Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court. Then on 1 February 2016, he became the permanent judge of Allahabad High Court.

Judges of Delhi High Court were appointed on 11 October 2021. He took oath as a judge of Delhi High Court along with Justice Chandra Dhari Singh.

In March 2024, a fire broke out in his Crescent bungalow in Delhi. When the fire brigade team reached the spot, they found burnt piles of bundles worth Rs. 500. When the matter became public, Justice Yashwant was transferred from Delhi High Court and sent to Allahabad High Court. There he took oath on 5 April 2025, but he was not assigned any responsibility. He was to retire on January 5, 2031.

On April 9, he submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu. His resignation comes at a time when a parliamentary inquiry was about to be launched into allegations of cash being burnt in the house. Now if the President accepts this resignation, then there can be a criminal inquiry against Justice Verma.

Important decisions taken during his tenure

1. Bail granted to doctor accused of children who died due to lack of oxygen in 2018

In 2018, Justice Verma granted bail to Dr. Kafeel Khan in an important decision. Kafeel Khan was in jail for about 7 months on charges of medical negligence. The case was of Gorakhpur Hospital, where a year ago 63 children and 18 people had died due to lack of oxygen.

2. Gun license rule in 2022

In 2022, Justice Verma said that a person with a license can have only two weapons under the Arms Act 1959. No more than being a member of a rifle club or association is allowed.

3. Decision on gold import in 2023

In 2023, a bench led by Justice Verma ruled that gold import is ‘restricted’ under the Customs Act 1962. He said that the word ‘ban’ also includes regulated or restricted goods.

4. Copyright case of Satyajit Ray’s film ‘Nayak’

In the year 2023, Justice Verma’s bench, while upholding the decision of a single judge, gave the ownership rights of the 1966 Bengali film ‘Nayak’ to director Satyajit Ray. RDB company owner R. D. Bansal had tried to stop HarperCollins from making the film’s story a novel.

5. Tax case in Delhi High Court

During his nearly three and a half years in the Delhi High Court, Justice Verma settled many major tax cases. In March 2024, he rejected the Congress Party’s petition in the Delhi High Court against re-investigation of the income tax. The court said that the tax officers have solid evidence and tax worth about Rs 520 crore was saved.
