Former Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni may return to IPL next week. Times of India, quoting team sources, has reported that his injury is improving rapidly and he may be available for the upcoming big matches.
Dhoni suffered a calf strain during a practice session about a week before the start of the IPL. For this reason he could not play in the first three weeks of the tournament.
Now speculations regarding his return have intensified. There is a possibility that Dhoni may take the field against Mumbai Indians on April 23 at Wankhede Stadium. If this does not happen, then he can be seen playing against Gujarat Titans on April 26 at Chepauk Stadium.
Sunrisers will not play in the match against Hyderabad Chennai Super Kings’ next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday. However, Dhoni will not be a part of the playing eleven in this match. The team management does not want to rush into anything regarding his fitness. CSK sources said, ‘Dhoni is currently going through the rehab process. We do not want to take any risk with his fitness, so he is being given time to become completely fit.

Batted long in practice session, focused on range hitting. Even though Dhoni is not playing matches, he is continuously sweating in net practice. Dhoni has batted for a long time in the nets recently. During this period he did special work on his ‘range hitting’. During the net session, Dhoni was seen hitting long sixes in the old style, which indicates that he has found his rhythm.
Can be used as an impact player It will be interesting to see in what role CSK will keep Dhoni after his return. Currently Sanju Samson is handling the responsibility of wicketkeeping and it is likely that he will continue it. In such a situation, the team can use Dhoni as an ‘impact player’. This will not put additional pressure on Dhoni for wicket-keeping and running and the team will be able to take advantage of his power-hitting.
Chennai has won 2 out of 5 matches Chennai Super Kings have won 2 out of 5 matches so far and are currently at 8th place in the points table. Dhoni’s return will not only strengthen the team’s middle order, but his strategic acumen will help CSK get back in the race for the playoffs.
